An elevated prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, can be worrying to see on a blood test. But a high PSA is not the same as a prostate cancer diagnosis.

PSA is produced by prostate cells, and several changes in or around the prostate can increase the amount that reaches the blood. Not everyone with an elevated PSA requires a biopsy. The decision depends on the combined risk assessment.

If a biopsy finds prostate cancer, what happens next?

If prostate cancer is identified, the biopsy provides information about the cancer's grade, while additional assessment can establish its stage.

The pathology report may include a Gleason score and Grade Group. These describe how abnormal the prostate cancer cells look under the microscope and help indicate how the cancer is likely to behave.

Can prostate cancer occur with a normal PSA?
